چکیده

Not too long ago real time audio synthesis and signal processing used to be restricted to dedicated hardware. In the mid-nineties software synthesizers entered the field of desktop computing. At the same time software for real-time computer music systems moved from dedicated DSP’s to desktop computers with diverging operating systems. PD (Pure Data) is a computer music systems that showed a great deal of flexibility, originally designed to run on SGI Irix and Windows NT machines, it has been ported to Linux in 1997 and runs on all major Desktop operating systems nowadays. This was only possible because of its openness and availability as free software. This paper describes a new port of PD, this time not for a new operating system but for a new type of computers: the PocketPC. The paper describes the capabilities of these small handheld devices nowadays and then goes on to describe different aspects of the software system derived from PD and called PDa.

A Handheld Software Radio Based on the Ipaq Pda: Software

Vanu, Inc. has demonstrated analog FM two way radio and digital APCO Project 25 waveforms on an iPAQ-based handheld software radio. The iPAQ contains a low-power 206 MHz StrongARM processor that is used for all signal processing. This paper explains the software approaches used and lessons learned from implementing the waveforms on this platform. Commercial and public safety applications of the...

Geometry Reduction for Urban Simulation on Handheld Devices

We present a real-time urban simulation on a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA). An existing desktop urban simulation is used to automatically generate potential visibility data, sub-divide the world into areas of similar potential visibility, and generate imposter images for complex and distant objects; all of which are used to achieve interactive frame-rates on a handheld device.

Animating Humans on Handheld Devices for Interactive Gaming

This paper examines the implementation and efficacy of impostor-based techniques on smallscreen devices, and compares their effectiveness with that of the same techniques when used on desktop computers. Firstly, a real-time computer game has been implemented on a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA), featuring animated humans in a virtual city. Secondly—in order to examine the potential of impostor...

Real-time damage detection of bridges using adaptive time-frequency analysis and ANN

Although traditional signal-based structural health monitoring algorithms have been successfully employed for small structures, their application for large and complex bridges has been challenging due to non-stationary signal characteristics with a high level of noise. In this paper, a promising damage detection algorithm is proposed by incorporation of adaptive signal processing and Artificial...

Using a Personal Computer to Perform Real-Time Signal Processing in Cochlear Implant Research

Cochlear implants are electronic devices that have enabled individuals with severe to profound hearing losses to regain some hearing. There is, however, substantial variability in speech perception performance among users of cochlear implants. One factor that may contribute to the individual differences is the way in which the device converts acoustic sound waves into electrical stimulation: th...
